Answering The Call

The Home Instead® network's Senior Emergency KitSM can help ensure that family caregivers like you have fast and easy access to important information about loved ones in case of an emergency call. This resource is designed to help family caregivers gather details about a senior's doctors, pharmacy and insurance company, medications and dosages, as well as allergies, power of attorney and other important information.
This toolkit will provide you with all the important information you need in a centrally located file so you are ready for a crisis, day or night. If you would like to request a printed copy of the toolkit, please contact your nearest Home Instead office.

Campfires, Hula-Hoops and Lakeshore Vacations

Dad was a hard-working guy. I remember once he didn't take a sick day for five years straight and he was so proud of it. His factory job didn't pay much, but somehow he and Mom always put enough away for a family vacation where we'd explore our state of Michigan each year. We'd pull out of the driveway with the station wagon packed to the roof with lawn chairs, camp stoves and air mattresses, heading north to the Upper Peninsula.

A Father's Gift of Time

As soon as we left home, Dad left all thoughts of work behind and we had his full attention. Of course there was sightseeing -- a ferry ride to Mackinac Island, a visit to a lighthouse, hiking to a waterfall or a tour at the iron mines. But thinking back, I realized the best thing about these trips, was the fact that we had time... for unhurried walks in the woods ... for laughing 'til it hurt watching Dad trying to master the hula hoop... for singing silly songs around the campfire... for thinking and dreaming.

Dealing with Change

Dad retired ages ago and, for years, he still kept his old work ethic, getting up at the same time each day and keeping the house in ship shape. Since Mom passed away, however, we've all noticed the changes. He gets confused doing even simple chores around the house, and last week I found out he hadn't paid the electric bill. He's such an independent guy and none of us can imagine moving him to assisted living or a nursing home. We know he needs daily help, but how can we return the gift of time and allow him to stay in the home he loves?

Home Instead® Can Help Him Stay in His Home

When family members or friends aren't able to help the older adults they love, Home Instead Care Professionals can. With a network of locations across Michigan and worldwide, Home Instead is all about taking care of older family members long-term in the homes they've enjoyed and treasured. We provide a range of services including companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, shopping, errands -- everything you'd do for your loved one, and more -- to give you peace of mind, and give your family member the safety and privacy he or she deserves.

Inspired by a Personal Experience

It was Paul and Lori Hogan's own personal experience caring for their 100-year-old grandmother in her home that inspired them to launch Home Instead in 1994. They realized many families had the same need for non-medical in-home care and elder companionship that could help seniors live independently at home. The demand for these important services has been so great, that the company's network now has 800 locally owned franchises across North America and around the globe.
