Understanding the Cost of Care for Aging Adults

Senior care should be about meeting individual needs. But we understand that for families who are considering care options for aging adults, the cost can be a major worry. Selecting the right care is important and you want to ensure it’s the best fit and value for your unique situation.

Find Care That Enhances the Quality of Life

Evaluating Cost of Care

When evaluating the cost of care, you should weigh the outcomes of care, beyond pricing alone. It’s important to consider the person’s safety, well-being, need for companionship and quality of life. Care is something that should be put in place to, not only to keep the person safe and healthy, but to enhance a person’s enjoyment of life.

Ways to Pay for In-Home Care in Indiana

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance is a policy that helps cover the costs of in-home care, assisted living, and nursing home care. Once you fulfill the elimination period (a waiting period during which benefits are not paid), Home Instead handles all the billing for your in-home care directly with your insurance company. This is done after submitting an Assignment of Benefits form, ensuring that your care is covered without the hassle of managing payments yourself.

Private Pay

Paying out-of-pocket is a straightforward option for in-home care. Individuals can use their savings, retirement funds, or other financial resources to cover the cost of care, offering flexibility and control over the services they choose.

Medicaid (Indiana Medicaid or Medicaid Waivers)
  • Indiana Pathways: This program is for Hoosiers 60 and older who qualify for full-coverage under Medicaid due to age, blindness, or disability. It offers comprehensive support for those who meet the "Nursing Facility level of care" criteria, including a care coordinator who helps ensure you receive all eligible benefits, such as in-home care, adult day services, home modifications, and more. To begin, call the Indiana PathWays for Aging Helpline at 877-284-9294.
  • Medicaid Health & Wellness Waivers (H&W) Waiver: Designed for individuals aged 18-59 who have disabilities and meet income requirements, this waiver provides an alternative to nursing home care by covering in-home care and other supportive services. The waiver enables individuals to live independently or transition from nursing facilities back to their homes or community settings.

  • Community Integration and Habilitation (CIH) Waiver: This waiver supports individuals with disabilities in living independently within their communities. It is especially helpful for those transitioning from institutional care to a home or community setting, offering flexibility in services to promote self-determination and integration.

  • MAPA Hours (Medicaid Prior Authorization): MAPA hours are specific care hours authorized by Medicaid, based on the recipient's needs. These hours are crucial for ensuring that Medicaid beneficiaries receive the necessary in-home care services, helping them maintain their health and safety at home.

Veterans Benefits
  • Veterans Affairs (VA) Aid and Attendance: This benefit provides additional pension to veterans and their surviving spouses who need help with daily activities due to age or disability. It can be used to pay for in-home care services, including assistance with bathing, dressing, and other personal needs. Application is straightforward and can be done by mail or in person at a VA office.

  • Housebound Benefits: For veterans who are largely confined to their homes due to permanent disabilities, the VA offers additional financial support through the Housebound Benefits program. This program is designed to help cover the costs associated with in-home care, making it easier for veterans to receive care in a familiar environment.

  • Care in the Community: Veterans may be eligible for long-term care services through the VA, including nursing home care, assisted living, and home care. These services offer comprehensive support, including medical care, physical therapy, and assistance with daily tasks, ensuring veterans receive the care they need in various settings.

Life Insurance Policies

Some life insurance policies offer an accelerated death benefit, which allows policyholders to access a portion of their death benefit early to pay for in-home care. This option provides a way to cover care costs without depleting other financial resources.

Dementia Care Grant

The Dementia Care Grant is a financial assistance program designed to support families who are caring for a loved one living with dementia. This grant is made possible through our partnership with HFC (Hilarity for Charity), an organization dedicated to raising awareness and providing resources for Alzheimer's and dementia care. Applying for the Dementia Care Grant is a straightforward process: Start by visiting the HFC website at www.wearehfc.org.
