Hazen volunteers gather for Earth Day cleanup
By Daniel Arens
With warm sunshine Thursday, several Hazen residents came together to serve their community in a unique way.
Thursday was Earth Day, and Christy Mindt decided the beautiful weather provided a great opportunity to get a group together and clean up around town.
“I wanted to do it to beautify Hazen,” Mindt said. “It was a way to give back to the community.”
Mindt and Erin Sorensen, both with Home Instead in Hazen, put out a call for volunteers. Several community members responded.
Among the responses was the Hazen Police Department, with Police Chief Jim Wolff and Officer Jesse Folkerts donating garbage bags to the other volunteers. Folkerts also took part in the clean-up itself.
The volunteers met at the Paul Weiser Memorial Pocket Park, where they divided into smaller groups to target different areas around town and pick up litter and trash around town.
Mindt said the event went very well, expressing gratitude for all the people who gave of their time to help honor Earth Day by making Hazen a little more beautiful.
