VA Benefits and Resources
For benefits such as health services, help at home, military records, burial benefits and nursing home options.
Adult Day Services
Provide supervised care and social interaction for adults with mental and/or physical limitations The care is for a specific period of time and includes meals, activities and exercise. The service permits family members to have some time off from their caregiver responsibilities. Payments include private pay, some long term care insurance, some insurance and grants.
Assisted Living Facilities
Assisted living is ideal for seniors who need some form of assistance to continue to live independently. Facilities provide a range of services including meals/housekeeping & assistance with medications, bathing & dressing. Some offer secure areas or specialized programs for individuals with Alzheimer’s/dementia. Residents must be able to walk or get into wheelchairs on their own to reach a safe area with little assistance (13 minutes in the event of a fire). A resident is allowed to “age in place” and remain in Assisted Living Facilities with the assistance of hospice when they can no longer meet the physical requirements.

Nursing Homes
Nursing homes are licensed by the state and must meet specific standards regarding patients rights, fire safety and quality of care. There are 2 levels of care provided in a nursing home. Skilled Care (Level II) includes care provided by a nurse, physical therapist, speech therapist, or occupational therapist. Intermediate Care (Level I) is a less intensive level of care than skilled nursing and may include assistance with bathing/dressing/eating. All facilities offer both levels of care. Private payment can be made, along with long term care insurance, Social Security benefits, etc. Medicare and Medicaid may help relieve the financial burden, but only when certain qualifications are met. Medicare does NOT cover Intermediate Care (Level I). Varying levels of Alzheimer’s/Dementia care are available in most nursing homes. Some offer separate, secured units and staff should have special training.
