Homeward Heroes

Many Veterans and their families are unaware of the benefits included in the VHA Standard Medical Benefits package. We're on a mission to educate and help Veterans access the quality home care they deserve.

VA Long Term Care Services

Services at home and in the community are part of the VA Medical Benefits Package. ALL enrolled veterans are eligible for these services.

Veterans must be enrolled in VA health care before applying for VA long term care services. Being enrolled in VA health care means you have applied for VA health care benefits and receive care through a VA facility on a regular basis. Receiving financial compensation for a VA disability does not automatically enroll you in VA health care. You may be eligible for VA health care services (known as the Standard Medical Benefits Package) if you served in the military and were discharged for any reason other than dishonorable.

Visit your local VA medical center’s new patient registration office to complete and submit the VA application for health benefits or enroll online at:

Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care

The Homemaker/Home Health Aide (HHA) is part of the VHA Standard Medical Benefits package, so ALL ENROLLED VETERANS are eligible if their VA provider agrees that they need home care services.

Homemakers and Home Health Aides are trained care professionals who work for an agency, like Home Instead, that is credentialed and contracted with Veteran Affairs. These are trained individuals who can come to a Veteran's home and help the Veteran take care of themselves and their daily activities. The HHA service can help Veterans remain safely in their own home and can serve Veterans of any age.

This program is for Veterans who need personal care services and help with activities of daily living (ADLs), as well as Veterans who have a family caregiver in need of respite. Services are based on the Veteran's assessed needs. For example, an aide may help the Veteran with:

  • Eating
  • Getting dressed
  • Grooming
  • Bathing
  • Using the bathroom
  • Moving from one place to another
  • Grocery shopping
  • And more

If you are interested in learning more about qualifying and applying for VA benefits, we encourage you to complete Home Instead's VA Qualification Form HERE. Upon completion, a Home Instead Representative will reach out to you regarding qualification status.

Is HHA or Respite Care right for me?

Use the Veteran Decision Aid for Care at Home to help you figure out what home care services or long term care services may best meet your needs now or in the future.

The Caregiver Self-Assessment can help your caregiver identify their own needs and decide how much support they can offer you. Having this information from your primary caregiver will help you, your care team, and your social worker make short-term and long-term decisions.

If Homemaker or Home Health Aide services are right for you, your VA social worker can help you make arrangements for those.

VA Pensions

VA helps Veterans and their families by providing supplemental income through the Veterans Pension and Survivors Pension benefit programs.
