Congratulations to the June 2022 Care Professional of the Month - Alfreda M.
We would like to congratulate Alfreda Melvin for being our Care Professional of the Month for June. She came to us with the experience of taking care of her mother with dementia and, also being her husband's primary caregiver when he became ill. Her clients really seem to be fond of her sharp wit and her attention to detail. Above all, Alfreda is especially known for her kindness. She says that kindness goes a long way. Read on to learn a little more about her.
Where Were You Born
Volant-- outside of Grove City, Pennsylvania.
Where did you grow up?
I went to school in my town in PA and then later attended Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. After moving to this area with my husband, I majored in Biology and Chemistry at Mary Baldwin College, with a minor in Education.
How long have you worked at HISC?
Four and a half years.
What's your favorite part of caregiving?
I feel that every chapter with a client is an adventure, and I feel like a cheerleader. Helping people remember the good parts of their lives is what I am meant to do. Encouraging seniors, making sure they are safe, and helping them hold on to their sense of self is worth its weight in gold!
Tell us a little about yourself
I was raised in a Quaker home where I learned to think and pray about things, and I learned that humor and gentility are a great mix. I've had a lot of experiences in my life-- from teaching middle school to working as a lab tech and more, and I feel happy with my life as it is now.
