CAREGiver of the Month - January 2022

Written By: Brian Lahm for Home Instead of Lubbock

Helping His Grandpa Changed Brandon Forever

Brandon Mora’s family-caregiving experience changed him forever. He explained: “The situation with my grandpa opened my eyes about how important someone’s caregiving assistance can be to a family. My grandpa, rest his soul, had cancer. I took care of him emotionally as well as physically.”

Brandon added: “I helped change his oxygen water and also helped him get around whenever he wasn’t hurting from the chemotherapy. I helped him all the way up until his death. Taking care of my grandfather and watching him pass was one of the hardest things I ever had to go through.” After his grandfather’s passing, Brandon joined Home Instead® of Lubbock. It was mostly because of a change in his school class schedule and partly the result of a leading of his compassionate heart.

Home Instead Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator Juanita Camacho noted: “Caring for his grandfather brought Brandon a sense of joy and happiness. Brandon decided that, while he was in school, he would like to bring joy and happiness to others.”

“The story about my journey to Home Instead is fairly simple but also has some complexities. I wanted to go back to school, and I was working at a full-time job. But I had to change my work schedule, so I found Indeed.com to look for another job. As a result, I got in touch with Home Instead. I really liked what the recruiter was telling me about the services Home Instead provides and flexibility of the schedule. I was sold on Home Instead almost immediately,” said Brandon, who joined Home Instead in January 2021.

Filling in other details about his employment history,  Brandon said: “I held a certification as a medical assistant, phlebotomist and EKG specialist, so this kind of work isn’t completely new to me.” Brandon wants to do his best as a Home Instead CAREGiver while he hits the books. He said: “It is paramount that we CAREGivers treat our clients as if they are our own family members no matter the circumstances. What I like most about being a CAREGiver is that I’m able to make a difference in the lives of not only the client, but also the family. A great CAREGiver will provide a family with a relief where they know their senior is in good hands.”

In fact, Brandon said his favorite stories and memories are the ones about families who appreciate CAREGiver help. After one client passed, the family appreciated each CAREGiver who provided a helping hand, Brandon said.

“The family gave Christmas presents to all who helped their senior loved one. It was certainly not expected. It was such a wonderful thing to do for those who made the family feel as if their senior was safe. Our CAREGivers give quality care to those in need and provide a sense of relief to their families,” said Brandon, who was selected as CAREGiver of the Month for January for the award-winning franchise owned by Tracy and Terry Baugh.

While announcing Brandon’s honor, Juanita said: “Brandon is wonderful, an ‘old’ soul. He has worked hard at developing his caregiving skills and has taken great pride in providing quality care with compassion, dignity and kindness. His mild-mannered personality wins the trust of our clients. People are amazed at how laid back he is, and that’s a quality that helps him excel in caring for our aging adults.  He makes everyone feel important as if they are his entire focus and nothing else matters at that point in time. They are confident in Brandon’s ability and willingness to assist them.”

Furthermore, Juanita said, Brandon communicates well with the Home Instead clients, the clients’ families, his co-workers and the office staff. Brandon has been a great addition to a highly rated organization. For the third time, Home Instead was honored with a Caring Super Star for its home-care service excellence in consumer ratings and Caring.com reviews. Home Instead is the only home-care agency in Lubbock County to be recognized as a 2021 Caring Super Star.

“Caregiving is simply doing things to enhance the quality of life for older adults and help keep them independent for as long as possible,” franchise co-owner Tracy Baugh said. “We like to say it takes a special person to become a Home Instead CAREGiver, not a special degree. It can be a rewarding career for individuals from every walk of life and age group.”

Brandon said: “During my first year with Home Instead, it’s been quite a ride!”
