Sunday, September 11th is National Grandparents Day! Though every day is a great day to show love and appreciation towards grandparents or older adults that are like grandparents to you, celebrating this holiday can be fun for you and them. Whether you’re a younger or an older grandchild here are activities and ideas to celebrate the day with your grandparent(s)!
5 Ways to Celebrate Grandparents Day 2022
1. Take Turns Interviewing Each Other
Learn more about each other by asking simple or thought-provoking questions. Start off easy with “this or that” questions or inquire about each other’s favorite activities. Bonus: Capturing audio or video of your interview with a smartphone can create a beautiful keepsake you all can enjoy later.
2. Show Your Love With Flowers
Flowers boost seniors’ well-being, according to a research study by Rutgers University. Not only can they be a beautiful way to brighten a grandparents' day, but they can also refresh memory and encourage companionship. Shop with a local flower shop like Garland Flowers to have a gift arrangement made.
3. Bake Together
Like flowers, baking has also been shown to positively affect seniors' well-being, especially when done with others. Young grandchildren often enjoy creating in the kitchen and seniors do too! Try creating a family favorite or give the recipe for one of these tasty treats a spin.
4. Visit a Local Museum
Exploring a museum with a grandparent can be a wonderful way to understand their taste in art and share yours too! The Park District of Oak Park is taking a trip to the Museum of Illusions on Grandparents Day and Oak Park Residents can receive a $17 discount. Click here to learn more!
5. Pull Out Old Photos, and Capture New Ones!
Going through old photos is a great way to relive memories and can bring great comfort to aging adults that have dementia. Spend part of Grandparents Day flipping through a photo album and have fun capturing new memories of the day to add as well!
