Adrian Serna was the kid who brought home all the stray dogs. Adrian also was planting beans before he started kindergarten and was fascinated with their growth as he watered and nurtured them. "I was caring for plants and animals as a kid, so I think of myself as being a caregiver my whole life," Adrian said.
Family caregiving landed on Adrian's radar when he was in college. "I was living on campus," Adrian said, "but then my grandparents needed more help to get around the house. They were just having a hard time as they were getting older. So, I moved in with them for the next five-plus years to help take care of them."
Recalling that fulfilling experience with his grandparents, Adrian listened intently as one of his wife's friends, a senior-care professional, encouraged his wife to try that line of work. "My wife has the same deep love for helping others as I do," Adrian pointed out.
Inquiring about a CAREGiver position, Adrian's wife called Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator Rianne Matthews at Home Instead Senior Care® of Louisville, an award-winning franchise that serves Boulder and Broomfield Counties.
"I caught wind of it," Adrian said, "and we started to talk, thinking that this is not only a good type of employment possibility for my wife, but for me, too. I have my past experience of taking care of my grandparents for five-plus years, and this is also something that I am passionate about." Ultimately, while his wife did not go to work for Home Instead Senior Care, Adrian joined Michael Lammers' franchise in December 2019. "My path to Home Instead was an interesting story," Adrian admitted.
Rianne explained: "Adrian came to us without any formal senior-care background, but he was a family caregiver. He is a small-business owner and has served in the military. He has the respect, positive attitude, work ethic and compassion that are the makings of a Grade A all-around CAREGiver. He immediately handled the challenges of caring for seniors with grace and good humor. He's got an interesting assignment among others, and he has handled it well. In fact, we honored him as CAREGiver of the Month for May just six months after he started."
Adrian has accumulated several lasting memories with seniors.
"My favorite story so far was taking care of my grandfather, who grew up on a ranch. As a kid, he had always loved horses. One day, he started to draw horses on a sheet of paper. To see his transition through a bunch of different styles of art related to his childhood was so amazing," Adrian said. "I even took a video near the end of my time with him where I recorded him drawing a horse. Each and every line went exactly where it belonged. During his drawing, he never had to use the eraser once. At the end of his last stroke, the pen still went exactly where it belonged. I just found this so amazing."
Adrian added: "As a CAREGiver, I like providing care for others because it is one of the most rewarding careers I have had so far. To be there for a person who really needs you and to provide that help with a smile and good care, it's a blessing."
Adrian loves being a part of the CAREGiver team for the Louisville franchise, a member of an extraordinarily successful network founded in 1994 in Omaha, Nebraska, by Paul and Lori Hogan.
