In recognition of National Pen Pal Day on June 1, we’re pushing our letter-writing initiative even further – with a goal of creating 10,000 more pen pal connections with lonely seniors this year.
But in order to hit this milestone, we need your help.
In less than the time it takes to walk the dog or finish a cup of coffee, you can write a short note that not only uplifts and brightens someone’s day but also makes them feel connected to the outside world. Many of our volunteers have received letters in return – and formed unexpected lifelong friendships.

How does it work?
- Since starting the pen pal program, roughly 10,000 volunteers have used our simple online form to share stories, hobbies, recipes, or even words of encouragement with older adults across the U.S. and Canada.
- Once you’ve submitted your digital letter, it is approved, printed and delivered to a senior via the Home Instead® network.
- Many of the Home Instead local offices team up with retirement facilities, senior centers and other organizations to help deliver the letters.

Why your letter matters to seniors
While younger generations enjoy the regained social freedoms following the COVID-19 pandemic, many older adults who live alone or have limited mobility still face daily isolation.
Even before the worldwide lockdown, roughly one-fourth of seniors were considered socially isolated and or lonely – with studies showing that many have little to no human interaction on a weekly basis.
Social isolation is not only unenjoyable, but it’s also unhealthy and can lead to many serious issues – such as depression — over time. Creating a pen pal relationship with a senior provides a great social outlet for someone who may not have one. And besides that, you’re making an amazing new friendship!
