How Can Companionship Improve Quality of Life?

Companionship is important for older adults and seniors for many reasons. Frankly, it’s important for all of us! Here are some of the key benefits to getting companionship services for your loved one:

  1. Social connection: As people age, they may experience social isolation and loneliness, which can have negative effects on their physical and mental health. There are many studies that say loneliness shortens life expectancy. Companionship services can help provide a sense of social connection and help prevent loneliness. Many seniors look forward their visits from a Care Professional.
  2. Improved mental health: Companionship can provide emotional support and reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that social interaction can also help improve cognitive function in older adults. Having an engaged conversation about local events, sporting news or worldly events can have immense impacts on the seniors mental health.
  3. Increased physical activity: Having a companion can motivate older adults to engage in physical activity such as taking walks or doing gentle exercises, which can improve their overall health and wellbeing. Often physical activity and social engagement go together. For example, during a walk its normal to talk about the things you see, stories it reminds you of and so much other small talk!
  4. Enhanced quality of life: Companionship can provide a sense of purpose and meaning in life, which can enhance overall quality of life for older adults. Companionship brings joy to the seniors week and will often be a highlight of the day or the week!
  5. Improved safety: Companionship can provide an added layer of safety for older adults who may be at risk of falls, accidents, or other health issues. A companion can help monitor their wellbeing and alert family members or healthcare providers if there are any concerns. By having the same Care Professional there each week, the senior will often mention changes in how they are feeling. The Caregiver can also notice these changes and report it to the office so proper supports can be arranged.
  6. Support for caregivers: Companionship can also provide support for family caregivers who may need a break from caregiving duties. Having a companion can provide temporary relief and support for the caregiver, which can improve their mental and physical health.

Companionship is an important aspect of care for older adults and seniors. It can provide social connection, emotional support, increased physical activity, enhanced quality of life, improved safety, and support for caregivers. Seniors should be encouraged to seek out companionship through social activities, volunteering, or through professional companion care services.

Home Instead matches Caregivers to each client based off of many factors but this includes likes, preferences, hobbies and much more. By scheduling the same team of Care Professionals to work with the client, they build a genuine relationship which makes these experiences so much more meaningful.
