Activities to do when a Senior has Dementia

Dementia is a condition that can cause cognitive decline, memory loss, and changes in behavior. It can be challenging to engage seniors with dementia in activities, but there are many ways to keep them mentally and emotionally stimulated. By properly planning activities that are within your seniors’ abilities, you can help them in so many ways! These activities can reduce stress, anxiety, expel energy and so much more. Here are some activities to do with a senior who has dementia:

Music therapy: Music has a powerful effect on the brain and can stimulate memories and emotions. Play some of the senior's favorite music and encourage them to sing along or dance. Remember to play music that they used to love! You can also use music to help calm and soothe them.

Reminiscing: Seniors with dementia may have trouble remembering recent events, but they often have vivid memories of their past. Look at old photos or watch home movies together and encourage the senior to share their memories and stories. Most seniors have photo albums of the memories they have made over the years!

Arts and crafts: Engage seniors with dementia in simple arts and crafts projects such as coloring, painting, or making collages. This can be a great way to stimulate their creativity and provide a sense of accomplishment. Gardening and plating small, easy to care for plants is also a great option!

Gentle exercise: Seniors with dementia may have limited mobility, but gentle exercises such as stretching, walking, or yoga can help maintain their physical health and reduce stress.

Sensory activities: Sensory activities such as touching and smelling different textures or listening to calming sounds can help seniors with dementia feel more connected to their surroundings.

Pet therapy: Pets can provide companionship and comfort to seniors with dementia. Spending time with a therapy dog or cat can be a great way to reduce anxiety and improve mood. If appropriate, a trip to a local pet store is another great option!

Cooking and baking: Seniors with dementia may enjoy simple cooking and baking activities such as mixing ingredients or decorating cookies. These activities can stimulate their senses and provide a sense of accomplishment.

When planning activities for seniors with dementia, it's important to keep in mind their individual needs and preferences. Be patient, flexible, and willing to adapt the activities to suit their abilities. Remember that the goal is not perfection but to provide a positive and engaging experience for the senior.
