We are no strangers to Home Instead, having owned a Home Instead franchise in Galway, Ireland for the last 10+ years where we employed over 200 CAREGivers to serve the needs of older people throughout the west of Ireland. Additionally, prior to our move to Ireland in 2006, we worked for Heather's father in his Greensboro, NC Home Instead franchise established in 2000! So, Home Instead has been making a difference in our lives for over 15 years!

Working with older adults and their families is truly a blessing. We are passionate about providing our CAREGivers with the skills and knowledge to help them provide the best care possible and provide first-class service to those we serve. Training and upskilling is a big part of our CAREGivers success and we have expanded our suite of CAREGiver Training Programs to include Dementia CARE, Positive Approach to Caring, Challenging Behaviors, Palliative Care, Personal Care and Patient Moving and Handling to name but a few.

Skilled, trained and experienced CAREGivers enhance every opportunity with our clients and our clients enjoy a much higher high rate of success whether post-hospital discharge or remaining in their homes successfully for longer than would otherwise be possible.

From a personal side, Heather grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and went to Indiana University. I grew up in the north west of Ireland in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim and after university became a music teacher in the local high school. Later, I received a Higher Diploma in Social Gerontology from National University of Ireland, and both of us have been involved with, or served on the Board of Directors for various local charities serving the needs of seniors in the community.

In addition to our Home Instead franchise in Galway, an absence of much needed support for people with an early diagnosis of dementia propelled us to do something about it and so, Heather also founded a national charity in Ireland for people living with the early stages of Dementia called Dare to DREAM (Dementia Research Education & Advocacy in Motion). This organization helps provide a platform for people coping with life after a dementia related diagnosis in a peer to peer environment. This not only helped the participants better understand their journey, it also gave us a much deeper understanding of the social and emotional upheaval that permeates through the living environment of people with a dementia diagnosis.

Over the years, Heather has been a guest lecturer in various Dementia related topics for Dublin City University (DCU), National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and Trinity University as well as serving in both Board of Directors and Advisory council for Aging Well and Dementia Friendly initiatives in Ireland. She has also presented at various Dementia conferences throughout Ireland and the EU and helped develop post-graduate dementia programs for local university programs.

We met in New York City and we have been happily married for over 18 years and have 4 beautiful children who are very much enjoying their new life in America!

The Benefits of Professional Caregiving Services

Hiring a professional caregiver helps your elderly loved one retain their independence, improves their mental health, keeps them safe, and benefits their quality of life. Our mission at Home Instead is to give our clients the support they need to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Here are just a few of the benefits that come with taking advantage of our services:

  • Preserve Independence: Many physical and cognitive health conditions can hinder people’s ability to live as independently as they once did. It can be devastating to lose the ability to care for yourself; however, with our home care services, your loved one can retain as much independence and dignity as possible. We assist our clients with the activities of daily living that they need, keeping them safe while supporting their independence and self-confidence.
  • Boost Mental Health: Studies show that seniors who are able to remain in their own homes are happier and tend to have better memory retention than those who move to facilities. Our caregiving services give your loved one valuable companionship while allowing them to remain in comfortable, familiar surroundings.
  • Lessen Health & Safety Concerns: As we age, our physical limitations grow. Areas of our homes that were once perfectly safe become more hazardous without our realizing it. Your senior care professional can assess your loved one’s home and point out any potential hazards to minimize trip or fall risks. If an unfortunate accident or emergency does happen, we will be right on hand to respond and provide care as soon as possible.
  • Provide Support: Caregiving is time-consuming and difficult, especially if you don’t have the professional background that our team does. Our professional home care services give you and your family the support you need to keep your loved one’s needs met while going to work, running errands, and attending to your other obligations. Taking advantage of professional home health care services dramatically reduces caregiver burnout and gives you a chance to relax.
  • Save Money: For many families, the expense of long-term care is a major consideration when making arrangements. In most cases, in-home caregiving services are more affordable than facilities. In addition, studies indicate that seniors who receive home care tend to recover more quickly and have lower hospital readmission rates than those who move to a care facility. This saves your family even more in health care costs over time.
  • Peace of Mind: While our elderly family members still add substantial value to our lives, their physical limitations can complicate things that were once simple. Taking advantage of our caregiving services gives you peace of mind that your loved one receives the daily care that he or she needs, even when you can’t be around.

The team at Home Instead is ready to help your loved one with the caregiving services they need. We serve clients with a variety of needs throughout the Greenwich, Stamford, Westport, and Fairfield, CT area. Contact us today to learn more!
