LEGO® pieces, created for both children and adults, are used to build all sorts of fun things. In the heartwarming case of Home Instead® Care Professional of the Month Magdalena Pulit and her client, LEGO pieces helped build a strong relationship.
“While working in one of the facilities, I encountered an older gentleman who became one of my favorite clients,” Magdalena explained. “He really enjoys building all sorts of different things from LEGO pieces, which I think is very unique. I really enjoy interacting with him and being able to hear about his interest in all sorts of different concepts when it comes to building LEGO sets, whether it is a specific tower or a model car he is determined to build.”
Magdalena added: “I really enjoy the fact that he is super independent, which is something I always thought was a strong character trait. He is always a very sweet individual who has shown all of his Care Pros lots of respect and care.”
The client is one of the reasons Magdalene finds her Home Instead position so fulfilling. Magdalena said she has her daughter to thank for directing her to professional senior care more than a year ago. “My daughter told me how she works in the caregiving field. She truly enjoys working with those in need, taking care of them and providing them with the proper care they need,” Magdalena recalled.
Magdalena pondered the conversation with her daughter and thought to herself: “I really want to get into the caregiving field.” So, Magdalena began to look on Indeed.com to find a job within her area. She said: “That’s when I stumbled upon Home Instead. I read about the different opportunities and the job description, and I instantly fell in love with Home Instead. Within a week or two, I received a phone call from Home Instead, and a staff member asked me for an interview. Things progressed quickly, and instantly I was able to start working for them.”
About a year ago, Magdalena made that abrupt job career change when she joined owner Kelly Hutchison’s award-winning Home Instead franchise in Itasca, Illinois. “I felt the need for a change in scenery. Throughout my adult life, I had been working as a bartender in a very popular Chicago bar. I have also worked in the housecleaning industry where I helped others keep their homes intact and sanitary,” Magdalena said.
Despite the lack of professional senior care experience, Magdalena knows what it’s like to compassionately care for others. “I feel as if I was always the family caregiver. I raised two children, who grew up to be beautiful individuals. I always provided them with food and water, clothes, a home, an education and anything else that they desired before they went out into the adult world,” she said.
“Moving forward, I have always taken care of my parents as well, specifically, my mom who was battling breast cancer. I make sure they always have everything they needed, cooking meals for them at home and running errands for them. I also provide the regular household duties, such as cleaning, doing their laundry and more.”
Because Magdalena compassionately and skillfully treats each client as if he or she was a family member, Human Resources Manager Alina Merrill announced Magdalena had been honored as the Home Instead franchise’s October Care Pro of the Month. Alina said, “Magdalena embodies Home Instead’s guiding principles of ‘Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.’ She is someone who is exceptional with any client. Focusing on Home Instead’s training, processes and procedures of successful caregiving helped Magdalena achieve the Care Pro award.”
“From the moment I joined Home Instead, I have loved every aspect of the job. Taking care of seniors when they need my help feels like a reward. I really enjoy working with clients from different backgrounds. I also love to learn about my clients so I can provide them with everything they need to feel cared for and secure. I love all of my clients’ stories and gaining knowledge of their cultural backgrounds. It is so precious that I have learned many different things that my clients enjoyed doing in their free time.” Magdalena said.
Turning her praise to the Home Instead office members, Magdalena said: “I really enjoy how flexible our staff is with all sorts of shifts I am able to take. The staff also is super understanding with the different shifts I may or may not be able to take. I am also able to say I enjoy the staff with whom I work because they are always so respectful, nice and enjoyable to talk to.”
